Abstract :
Keywords: Storytelling Method, Teaching, Spoken Narrative. This research is attempts to examine the use of storytelling method for teaching spoken narrative text to the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tawangharjo. The purpose of this research was to find out storytelling method for teaching spoken narrative text. The researcher investigated whether the storytelling method can be an effective way for students' of SMP Negeri 1 Tawangharjo. The objectives of the study are (1) To investigate the implementation of storytelling teaching speaking as studied in the lesson plan, (2) To investigate students' response to taught using storytelling method, (3) To investigate any siginificant difference of the students? speaking before and after being taught by using storytelling. In this study, the researcher used qualitative descriptive. 30 students from one class in eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tawangharjo were as the subject of the research. Questionnaire and questionnaire rubric scores were the method of data collection. The results of the questionnaires that were shared, it indicates that from 10 statements of the questionnaire, 7 statements have earned a positive perception, 2 statements have earned a neutral perception, and a statement have earned a negative perception of the storytelling method for teaching spoken narrative text. Questionnaire rubric scores for assessing speaking skill that there was the mean score on each indicator has increased even one to two levels. The students got much better in their performance. Although the mean scores were below three, students competence was better than theirs in the first meeting. It implies that storytelling could improve the students' speaking ability increased, although not significantly. Based on data analysis, it is concluded that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tawangharjo had a positive response of utilizing storytelling method for teaching spoken narrative texts. The opinion of the most students agreed that the storytelling method for teaching spoken narrative was enticing, motivation, usefulness, benefits, ease of use, and encourage students' speaking comprehension during teaching learning activities as proved by students' perceptions to previous survey.
