Wijayarsih, Septi. 2019. Improving Students? Speaking Skill Using Role Play Technique for Eighth Grade Students of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang in the Academic Year of 2018-2019. Final Project, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Language and Arts Education, University of PGRI Semarang. Keywords: Speaking Skill, Role Play This study aimed to: (i)find out the students? speaking skill before they were taught by using role play technique; (ii) find out the students? speaking skill after they were taught by using role play technique; (iii) find out whether or not there is significant difference between students? speaking skill before and after they were taught by using role play technique. The study was done at the eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang. The design of this study was pre experimental research by using oral test. It used the subjects of the study were whole students in VIII A as a control group and VIII B as a experiment class, which consist of 30 students. All of the students were given pre-test, the test which was given before using role play technique. After they got treatment, the writer continued by giving post-test. The result of this study indicated that using role play technique in teaching speaking skill was more effective to improve the student?s speaking skill achievement than without using role play technique. It can be seen from the pre-test and post-test result. (i) The students? ability in speaking of the eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang in he academic year 2018/2019 who were taught without role play technique was poor. In the pre-test, the highest score was 80, the lowest score was 56, an d the mean of the pre-test was 64.67. while the highest score of post-test was 80, the lowest score was 60 and the mean of the post-test was 66.93. Furthermore, the category f the mean was poor. Thus, there was no significant improvement of the students? score in speaking. (ii) The students? ability in speaking of the eighth grade students of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019 who were taught using role play technique was good. In the pre-test, the highest score was 76, the lowest score was 48, and the mean of the pre-test was 64. While, the highest score of post-test was 92, the lowest score was 76, and the mean of the post-test was 80.53. Furthermore, the category of the mean was improved from poor to good category. In addition, teachers should take an appropriate technique to improve student?s reading comprehension. The teacher should takes an interesting and suitable way with their age and their interest. And also the teacher gives a great motivation to the students to practice their reading continually.
