The objective of this research was to find out whether STAD (Student
Teams Achievement Division) can improve tenth graders? grammar mastery in
Simple Present Tense at 12th Surabaya State High School. This is a Classroom
Action Research (CAR) done in two cycles, in which each cycle consisted of 4
steps : Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. The subject of the study
was students of X IPA 2 at 12th Surabaya State High School in the academic year
of 2017 / 2018. The writer used test, observation, and documentation as her data
collecting techniques, while the data collecting instruments were problem sheet,
observation sheet, and journal, letter also a camera. Then, the data gotten from
students? score were analyzed through simple calculation. The result of this study
showed that STAD is the appropriate strategy for teaching grammar to students. It
was proved by students? score percentage that improved in every cycle, which is
41% on Pre Cycle, 65% on Cycle 1, and 88% on Cycle II. Therefore, it can be
concluded that STAD can improve tenth graders? grammar mastery in Simple
Present Tense at 12th Surabaya State High School.
