Abstract :
The objectives of the study are to find out the categories of conversation
discourse structure in the interview between John Harwood and Barack Obama and to
identify aspects of conversation in the interview between John Harwood and Barack
Obama. The data collection used the following steps: Selecting the data, Downloading
the video recording of the interview between John Harwood and Barack Obama in
www.CNBC.com, watching the video, transcribing and describing the significant
point of every utterance using the categories of discourse structure of conversation,
doing the library study to find the conceptual definitions, and analyzing the data.This
study focuses on the aspects of conversation in the conversation between John Harwood
and President Barack Obama in CNBC?s program ?Closing Bell?. The discourse structure
found in conversation between John Harwood interviewer and Barack Obama consists of
opening stage, middle stage, and closing stage. In the opening stage the researcher found that the interviewer opens the conversation with salutation. Furthermore, the middle stage discusses about many topics such as Obama?s campaign. In addition, the writer found a
part of conversation aspect namely adjacency pairs and it is the main form discussed in
this research paper. In the closing stage, John Harwood the conversation by making one
leave taking and replies by Barack Obama.There are 44 utterances analyzed where
preference of organization is the greatest number found in conversation. The totals of
preference organization found are 22 or 24% which John Harwood are 22 preferreds
(48%) , and Barack Obama are 21 preferred (48%) and 1 dispreferred (2%). Turn taking
organization, topic management and adjacency pair in the conversation are 11 or 12%. In
repair is 2 or 2%, and clarification check and feedback are not found. From the
explanation above, John Harwood dominated the conversation because he produced more
aspect conversational than Barack Obama.
