Abstract :
This study examines interpersonal meaning found in Oprah Winfrey?s Address on The 50th Anniversary March at Lincoln Memorial on Washington D.C. The writer has an interest to use Oprah Winfrey speech script because there are many clauses written in different sentence types and they may give a lot of knowledge related to considerable study. The writer tries to explore how interpersonal meaning is achieved from the perspective of Functional Grammar and with the focus on mood, modal auxiliary and personal pronoun in pronoun system. The theory proposed by Halliday (2009) was used as the framework to analyze interpersonal meaning built in Oprah Winfrey speech. The object of the study was analyzed using descriptive qualitative research as a method of study. The result of the study shows that the clauses in Oprah Winfrey speech script are major clauses (99%) and minor clause (1%). The mood systems are declaratives (92%), exclamative (4%) and wh-interrogative (4%). Then, the modal auxiliaries employed frequently are ?Will? (67%) and ?Must? (33%). Last, the pronoun systems used mostly are ?We? (34%) that used 15 times and ?Us? (20%) that are adopted 9 times.
