Abstract :
Generally when we are involved in a conversation, we are cooperating with each other. Grice developed a model called Cooperative Principle, which human beings follow to ensure successful communication. Grice mentioned that they are four maxims of Cooperative Principles, such as: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Based on Grice’s Cooperative Principles and its maxims, I attempts to analyze maxims in “ Little Women†novel by Louisa My Alcott adapted by Lucia Monfried. This study is aimed to find out flouting maxim of relation which are employed by the characters and to find out the speaker’s meaning of flouting maxim of relation in “ Little Women†novel by Louisa My Alcott adapted by Lucia Monfried. This research is qualitative research, its mean focus on material it does contain of research by using many literatures. Literature is foundation of this research. I collect literature about research, collect novel that will be analyzed and analyze each of utterance in “ Little Women†novel by Louisa My Alcott adapted by Lucia Monfried. There is one kind of flouting the maxim that I analyzed. It is flouting Maxim of Relation. I also analyzed the speaker’s meaning of each character that flouts maxim of relation. Due the fact of flouting of maixims is the important point in pragmatic and from the result above, English learner should enrich themselves by understanding flouting of maixims. We can find the flouting maxim of relation in script movie or the other object like short story, script drama and novel.
