Abstract :
In this research, the writer uses the feminist approach to analyze the main women
characters. The writer uses the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the novel. The research
method used in this research is observation and documentation. The observation means the writer
reads the novel carefully and critically.
The research findings are as follows. First, there are two main characters in the novel
Loving (Bettina Daniels and Ivo Steward), and sixteen minor characters (Justin Daniels, Anthony
Pearce, John Field, Seth Watterson, Mary Watterson, Norton Hess, Oliver Paxton, Jeannie,
Mathilde, Naomi Liebson, Steve, Bernard Zule, Mc Carney, Alexander, Salbert, Bill Hale).
Second, the characters of Bettina was good, beautiful, gentle, smart and energetic. Bettina always
helped her father and loved him. Beside that, she was smart girl in her studies and had talent like
her father in writing a play. Third, there are three sectors of the main character?s struggle,
namely (1) Economy sector, Bettina worked in a drama theatre, after her father died, and she was
successful to become a famous author like her father. (2) Law sector, Bettina?s failure in her
household, so she had right to get divorced from her second husband, and she got right to take
care for her son. Beside that, Bettina made a contract in her job. And (3) Social sector, Bettina
got alimony from Ivo, and Bettina?s struggle to get her career, finally can be seen from her
success as a writer like her father.
