Abstract :
This thesis entitled Ideational Meanings Created In Mary Joseph?s
Short Story ?William Tell? has two objectives. The first is to find out the system
of transitivity recognized on the text. The second is to construe how the field of
the discourse is built.
The data of this research were took a short story of Mary Joseph. They
were then segmented into clauses, and they were classified and identified in the
transitivity system of functional grammar. The field of the discourse in the short
story was interpreted using David Butt's theory.
There are 27 clause complexes which consists of 82 clauses, one of which
is left unanalyzed because it is a minor clause. The other 81 clauses are major
clause. The most dominate processes are material process (54,32%). thus, actors
as agentive participants dominate over the other agentive participants.
The field of the discourse is described in (a) experiential domain is about
one man, he is William Tell who refused the rules of the Duke Gessler, he is a
king of Aldorf. (b) short term goal is William Tell proves to tyrant that right on
his side, and he is doing the challenge from the Duke. (c) Long term goal are a
rule which is made in order to be obeyed by people and if someone can not
receive an unfair rule, he or she must refused to obey this unfair rule.
