Abstract :
This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Polite Terms in Conversations between
Announcers and Participants in English Time PRO 2 FM Program. The aim of this
study is to analyze the use of polite terms in a conversation between announcers and
participants of PRO 2 FM English time program on every day evening. The data of
this study is taken from the recorded conversation in English Time PRO 2 FM
Program on every day evening which is then transcribed into text. The writer took 20
participants as the sample.
In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative method which
the writer described and explained everything related to the use of polite in a
conversation between announcers and participants in English Time PRO 2 FM
Program. There were several steps. First, the writer identified polite words in
conversation between announcer and participant. Second, the writer classified them
into each group. The last is interpreting the data. To strengthen the investigation
process and the result gained, the writer also used library research to find further
information and some theories related to the matter discussed.
The result of the study leads to the conclusion that both the announcer and
participants used polite words, they usually started their conversation by greeting and
then followed by asking their health, they use polite words such as thanks when they
want to express their gratitude; sorrywhen they want to apologize, to ask someone to
repeat his/ her utterance that they didn?t heard well, and when they heard someone in
bad situation;pleasewhen they ask someone for help. They used polite requests such
as can, may, and willwhen they were in an informal situation; wouldand couldwhen
they felt that they were in a formal situation.
