PERFORMERS EXISTENCE IN THE GREATEST SHOWMAN MOVIE: A
MARXISM STUDY. A Final Project in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For
a Degree Award of Sarjana Sastra in English Language and Literature, Supervised
by Dr. Agnes Widyaningrum, S.E., S.Pd., M.Pd. FBIB-UNISBANK Semarang.
This research is conducted to analyze the circus and circus? performers existence of
P.T. Barnum in The Greatest Showman Movie. The theory of the research is
marxism theory by Karl Marx. The points in this research are to highlight the forms
of discrimination, the reasons why P.T. Barnum?s circus was hated and how they
overcame it. The researcher used the qualitative method to collect all data that the
researcher might need. In this study the researcher found the form of discrimination
endured by the circus, they were social class discrimination and physical
appearance discrimination. The reasons people hated the circus were because the
circus was considered fake and because the performers? appearances. The effects
of discrimination were inferiority complex and doing seclusion. Finally the
struggles of the cirus? performers to overcome their problems were by doing selfacceptance and looking for recognition.
