Abstract :
The thesis is entitled The Codes Switched by the Characters of ?Diary Dodol (Lagi) Seorang Istri? Novel. The writer chosethe title because code- switching is an interesting topic to be discussed and there are a lot of code- switchings found in the novel. This thesis has two objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out the types of code- switching in the Diary Dodol (Lagi) Seorang Istri novel. Second, it is aimed at explaining the function of code- switching which isindicated in the Diary Dodol (Lagi) Seorang Istri novel. Documentation method was used to collect the data. All of code- switchings found in Diary Dodol (Lagi) Seorang Istri novel were taken to be the data. In finding out the phenomena of code- switching, the writer took notes the dialogue of Diary Dodol (Lagi) Seorang Istri novel. In analyzing the data, the writer applied descriptive qualitative technique. Eighty one code- switchings were found in selected data. The types of code- switching mostly found is inter- sentential code- switching (63%) and intra- sentential code- switching (37%). Frequently, code-switching is used to communicate more effectively (36%), to ease communication (30,8%), to emphasize a point (9,9%), to capture attention (8,6%) and to convey precise meaning (6,2%).
