Abstract :
Character is one of the main point of narrative storytelling. In character design, it is important to make the character relatable to the audience in any way. Wheter they have something in common as a person or the similiarity with the character with what they have been through in the story. Therefore the character need to be designed to support the story as well. One of the life events that connected to someones character is Chinese Zodiac where it celebrated every year and become a special year for those who born under the same sign. By the compatibility and traits of the signs, The Dog, The Rabbit, The Dragon, and The Rat were choosen to be designed. The process start from concept of a gangster story and then reasearch about the signs itself. Then, to determine the artstyle, there are some survey about what kind of style will make the character popular among the target audience. The reseach method comes from literatures, web articles, film and animations. Resulting the four characters having an appealing trait in their visual comes from their tridimensional backgrounds. The costumes and facial expression give each of the character impressions of their traits.They using the identical costume to state that they are in the same gangster organization.
