Key words: basic questioning, writing, recount text, action research.
The use of basic questioning in this study has a purpose at developing students?
ability in writing recount texts. I used real action of the teacher in response to a
certain problem encountered during the teaching and learning process through cycles
of action. So, it was an action research that used eighth grade students of VIII E of
State Junior High School 25 Purworejo in the second semester of the academic year
2009/2010 as the subject of the research. The objective of the study is to find out how
well basic questioning gives contribution in teaching recount. This action research
needed five meetings which divided into prior research and two cycles. There were
two meetings for each cycle. In the first cycle, the students were introduced with the
use of basic questioning techniques in teaching writing recount texts. The second
cycle was the betterment of the first cycle. There were some modifications of first
cycle in the second cycle.
Based on the data analysis, it could be said that basic questioning techniques
successfully improved the students? ability in writing recount texts. The students?
improvements were shown by the students? interest in responding the questions and
their motivation in taking part of the activities in the learning process. It meant that
there was a better participation of the students in the classroom. Therefore, it
indicated that basic questioning techniques definitely developed a better students?
behaviour in writing recount texts.
In line with the result, I propose that basic questioning is one of the positive
ways to increase students? enthusiasm in learning English. This result hopefully will
motivate the teachers to use the basic questioning in their classroom activities,
