Abstract :
In this paper, the writer analyzed about gender role responsibility and gender stereotype of men and women characters described in A Thousand Splendid Suns. The novel captures the role, responsibility and stereotype of men and women characters in Afghanistan. The analysis has three goals which are describing the gender role and responsibility and gender stereotype in family relationship. The writer applies Gender Analysis for the research. The technique that is applied by the writer is close reading to gain deeper understanding of the novel. The result of the research is men have role as husband and father and their responsibility to provide the family needs and protect their family. The women characters have role as wife and mother and their responsibility to take care a family and homemaker. The stereotype of men characters pictures as kind, wise and loving. Meanwhile, the women character stereotypes are dutiful, tough, and loving. In conclusion, the men and women characters have stereotype based on their role in household.
