Abstract :
This research was attempted to describe of announcement text elements
affecting students? reading ability at second grade natural science of SMAN 1
Bonjol. The design of this research was descriptive research. The number of
population members was 124 students. To get the number, the researcher used
cluster random sampling. The number of sample was 92 students. In collecting the
data, the researcher used reading test. The data of this research were gathered by
reading test in the form of multiple choice items. Before the researcher gave the
real test, she tried it out since the instrument was categorized as non standardized
test. The result of the try out test was used to know the reliability of the test. It
was found that the reliability of the test was high (0.70).
After analyzing the data, it was found that the second grade natural science
of SMA N 1 Bonjol had low ability in reading comprehension of announcement
text. It was indicated by the fact that 54 students (58.7 %) had low ability in
comprehending announcement text elements. Specifically, the students? ability in
comprehending the opening of announcement text was low. It was indicated by
the fact that 47 students (51.1 %) had low ability. The students? ability in
understanding the content of announcement text was low. It was indicated by the
fact that 69 students (75 %) had low ability. The students? ability in understanding
the closing of announcement text was high. It was indicated by the fact that 57
students (62 %) had high ability.
Based on the finding of this research, the researcher suggested that the
English teacher give more explanation and exercise related to the announcement
text. In addition, for the next researcher to find out and analysis more factors that
affect students? ability in reading comprehension of short text.
