Abstract :
The purpose of this research was writing experience to find out the
grammatical errors madeby thesecond year students at English Department of
Bung Hatta University. The design of this research was descriptive. The
population of this research was thesecond year students at English Department of
Bung Hatta University. The researcher used total sampling technique in taking the
sample. It means the sample was 24students. Writing test was the instrument to
get the data. The students were asked to write a paragraph about their good or bad
experience. The test was reliable because the reliability of the test was very high
(0.96).
The result of this research showed that the second year students at English
Department of Bung Hatta University made errors in writing a paragraph about
their experience. The first,they made errors in omission (28.3%). In specific, they
are omission of subject 7 (6.2%), omission of verb 3 (2.7%), omission of
preposition 2 (1.8%), omission of article 2.5 (2.2%), omission of plurality 9
(7.9%), and omission of be 8.5 (7.5%). The second, they made errors inaddition
(11.1%). In specific, they areaddition of be 2.5 (2.2%), and addition of adverb 10
(8.9%). The third, they made errors in misformation(59.3%). In specific, they are
misformation of V2 17 (15%), misformation of article 4.5 (4%), misformation of
noun4 (3.6%), misformation of diction 21.5 (19%), misformation of verb after
modal and infinitive 7 (6.2%), and misformation of ?be 13 (11.5%). The last,they
made errors inmisordering (1.3%). In specific, they are misordering of adjective
1.5 (1.3%), andmisordering of modal auxiliary (0%). The researcher found that
most errors made by the students were misformation (59.3%).
Based on the result of the research, the lecturers are suggested to minimize
the students? grammatical error by giving more exercise in writing.For students,
they are suggested to learn more in writing experience. They also should know
about grammatical errors that they might do in writing.
