Abstract :
This study is aims to describe the types of directive speech act in the utterance among the
characters in the Maleficent movie script. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative
method to classify and analyze the data. After investigating the utterance in the script, the
writer found several findings on it. First, the utterances in this script are analyzed using the
directive speech act from the theory of Searle (1979). Speech act of directive itself has many
types; requesting, suggesting, advising, commanding. Moreover, those utterances can also be
investigated from the communication strategy using the theory of Brown and Levinson
(1987). The result of this study shows that the most dominant speech act of directive in this
movie is speech act of commanding (33 data), and followed by Speech act of requesting (14
data), speech act of suggesting (4 data), and finally speech act of advising (1 data). From all
forms of directive speech acts, speech act of commanding has the highest frequency of use
among others. The findings of this research will be explained in detail in this thesis.
