Abstract :
This research aims to describe metaphorical expressions of joy based on conceptual theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). The propose of this research is to find how joy are expressed metaphorically and to examine the types of joy expressions in different song lyrics. The writer analyzed 22 songs in terms of the primary emotion of JOY classified by Parrot (2001) that covers cheerfulness(cheerfulness, joviality), zest (zest), contentment (contentment), and optimism (hope).Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data.Based on the analysis the writer founda number of types of JOY emotion, such as cheerfulness (7), zest (1), contentment (1), and optimism (1).Then, the result shows how JOY are expressed metaphorically, in terms of JOY is the sky full of stars, JOY is Light up the path, JOY is love, JOY is sunshine,JOY is firework, JOY is carousel, JOY is drink and drug, JOY is on fire, JOY is rainbow, and JOY is paradise.As a result, the findings can give the contribution to the readers to see that there are various ways to convey the primary emotion of JOYmetaphorically instead of literally and to inspire people or linguist to study other basic emotions linguistically in deep.
