Abstract :
In this study, the researcher analyzes the relationship between characters
and settings in the text of Khaled Hosseini?s A Thousand Splendid Suns novel.
This analysis has two purposes: (1) to describe and analyze main characters
representation and (2) to describe settings and analyze how the settings form main
characters in the novel. In analyzing this novel, the researcher applies
structuralism approach based on Bressler (1999). The approach is supported by
the theory of character, setting, and relationship between character and setting
from theory of Roberts (1999), and Abrams (1981). The researcher applies a
technique of close reading based on structuralism approach and carry out by
descriptive method to explain the data from the analysis. The researcher found
that the life setting experienced by the main characters can have a lot of impact on
the main characters? trait. This novel has two main characters. First, Mariam is the
main character who is introverted, obedient, compassionate, and religious.
Mariam's four traits are influenced by childhood, social relationships, marriage to
Rasheed, and war settings. Second, Laila is an intelligent, cheerful, outspoken,
and compassionate character. These four traits owned by Laila are based on
childhood, social / friendship, life with Rasheed and Mariam, and war settings.
