Abstract :
The actions performed in saying something are generally called speech acts.
Speech acts is an utterance defined in terms of speaker?s intention and the effect it has on
a listener. This research is about speech acts found in the movie, Jumanji: The Next Level.
The aim of this research is to describe the speech acts that occurred in the Jumanji: The
Next Level movie and to find out the most dominant types of speech acts in the movie.
The main theory to analyze the speech acts applied in this research is theory proposed by
Searle (1976). Method used in this research is qualitative method. The source of the data
is taken from Jumanji: The Next Level movie. Based on the result of the analysis, all the
types of speech acts, representative, directive, commissive, and expressive, except
declarations speech acts are found in the movie which is performed by the movie
characters. In analyzing speech acts data, context is very important in determining the
certainty that the data is correct. The findings of this research is showed that Directive
speech acts in the most dominant type especially about commanding utterance, with 42
cases out of total 98 cases. It is happen because the speakers in the movie more often ask
the listener to take the action desired by the speaker. In this research, the researcher did
not find declarations speech acts. This can happen because in the conversation between
the characters there are no utterances from the speaker intended to create the new things.
In conclusion, the analysis point to the conclusion that one?s knowledge and the context
of situation of the speech acts influence the interpretation of the speech acts meaning.
