Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to describe the second grade students ability in writing an analytical exposition text based on a picture at SMAN 1 Kecamatan Mungka. In writing an analytical exposition text, student should consider at least 2 components. They are the ability in writing generic structure and applying language features. The population of this research was the second grade students at SMAN 1 Kecamatan Mungka. To select the sample the researcher used total sampling technique because the sample was relatively small and the total number of sample was 42 students. The data were collected through a writing test. The researcher used inter-rater technique to know the reliability of the test. The reliability coefficient of the test was 0. 91. The result of this research showed that in general the second grade students? ability at SMAN 1 Kecamatan Mungka in writing an analytical exposition text was low. It could be seen that 57% students had low ability. In detail, the students? ability to organize the thesis was high. It was proved that 71. 42 % had high ability in wring the thesis. The students? ability in writing the arguments of analytical exposition was low. It was proved that 66. 67 % had low ability. The students? ability in writing reiteration was low. It was proved that 57. 14 % had low ability moreover; the students? ability to apply language features was low. It was proved that 54. 77 % students had low ability. Based on the results of this research, the researcher would like to give some suggestions to English teachers, students, and the future researchers. English teachers are suggested to give more exercises and explanation more about analytical exposition text. For students are expected to learn more about analytical exposition text and for the further researchers it is also suggested to find out the appropriate technique in teaching analytical exposition text.
