ABSTRACT
THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING ON STUDENTS’SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 WADAGA

This study aims to find out whether there is any significant effectiveness of Public Speaking in teaching speaking. Its effectiveness is analyzed from the students‟ achievement in speaking skill before and after the treatment is given. The research question formulated “is there any significant effectiveness of public speaking in teaching speaking at the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Wadaga?â€. This study applied pre-experimental design by using one class or group to be taught by Public Speaking method, namely class of VIII I. The sample of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 WADAGA who are registered in academic year 2019/2020. This study conducted from July 22nd to August 8th, 2019. The instrument used for collecting data is oral test and the data is analyzed by using descriptive statistic and inferential statistic that are counted in SPSS 16.0. The findings showed that students‟ speaking score in post test session is higher than speaking score in pre test session. It was because after the treatment is done, the students was easy to speak in front of the classroom and know how to organize their ideas well. With the real object, public speaking also gave the time to explore, synthesize, and construct what they want to speak before speaking activity. It is proved by the comparison of the mean score of pre test and post test, where the mean score in pre test is 2.32 and the mean score in post test is 3.60. As the result, the gain score is 1.28. Furthermore, the effect size of the study is 0.99. It indicates that there is any significant effectiveness of teaching speaking by using public speaking. However, teaching speaking by using public speaking spent more time so that might be appropriated if they are taught individually especially where the students‟ condition is lack of vocabulary. It might be better if this method is suited with the students‟ grade and capability so that teacher can be considered either it is done in form of group or individual term.
