Abstract :
ABSTRACT This research is about the use of illocutionary acts in the movie entitled “TheProposal”.This research aims to identify and classify what types of illocutionary acts usedbased on Searle’s classification of speech acts and investigate the most dominantillocutionary act used by characters throughout the movie. The researcher applies bothqualitative and quantitative method to analyze the data. Qualitative research is applied toanalyze the data in the form of the text in the movie scriptand to identify and classify whattypes of illocutionary acts used in“The Proposal”movie,and quantitativeresearchis used tocount the percentagesof illocutionary acts used in“The Proposal”movie to conclude whichillocutionary act is dominantly used. The sources of this research were the script of thedialogues spoken by the characters in“The Proposal”movie.The result of the analysis, theresearcher finds that the characters used all types of illocutionary acts with the total 47illocutionary acts,7 illocutionary acts are assertives, 24 acts are directives, 11 acts arecommisives, 3 acts are expressive, and the rest of them are declaratives. Based on thefindings, the most dominant illocutionary acts used is directives illocutionary acts with51,05%. Keywords:Illocutionary ActsTypes,most dominant,“The Proposal”Movie.
