Abstract :
Semiotics is the study of signs in events, concepts, motion, and figures. While pragmatics examines the relationship between language and context, pragmatics emphasizes the function of language to communicate in everyday life. Semiotics-Pragmatics examines the relationship between signs and language and the communication we use every day. The object chosen in this study is the signs of the Gawi dance of the Lio ethnic in Ende using semiopragmatic elements that describe the origin of the sign, its usefulness and its influence on the perpetrators. The purpose of this study was to find out what meanings are contained in the signs of the Gawi dance studied. The research was conducted using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory approach, which is a triadic model consisting of representations, objects (icon, index, symbol), and interpretations, and using pragmatic studies as an explanation of the interpretation of the interpreters. This research is a qualitative research based on secondary data studies in the form of videos, pictures and reviews related to Gawi dance. Data collection is done by grouping into verbal and nonverbal data. The object found was the meaning of philosophy in twelve non-verbal signs and four verbal signs. The data analysis focused only on the symbolic meaning of the non-verbal data. Verbal data is explained only through signs, objects, and their meanings, as field studies have had little time to find sources that use the ancient Lio language, the language used in research due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The research conducted is intended to be a reference for other researchers and as an addition to knowledge for readers. The researchers hope cultural research can advance at a time when many cultures have gone extinct.
