Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is a
correlation between students' mastery of past tense (X) and their ability in writing
narrative text (Y) in class X IPA students at SMAN 1 Lingga Utara. The
population in this research were all students of class X IPA in the academic year
2019/2020, which consisted of 37 students, and the sample taken was 18 students
from class X IPA 1 by using cluster random sampling technique. The method used
in this research is a quantitative method with a correlational approach. The data
obtained were analyzed using the Pearson product moment correlation method
and the instruments used were the past tense mastery test in the form of multiple
choices and the writing test to measure the students' ability to write narrative text.
The results of the study indicate that there is a correlation, with the correlation
coefficient index of 0.90 which means there is a correlation at a high level
(high). In addition, testing the hypothesis shows the correlation value coefficient
index of 0.90 is higher than the correlation value coefficient index of the
product moment table (rtable) of 0.47, which means that the null hypothesis (Ho)
is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. . Based on the results
of the research described above, the researcher assumed that the better the
students? mastery of past tense, the better the students? skills in writing narrative
text. Therefore, the researcher suggests the English teacher to increase students?
interest in learning tenses because it can improve students' writing skills.
