Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of the KWL strategy
on students? reading skill at SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang. The method that is
used is quantitative method which the data is served by numerical and tested by
the statistical formula of t-test. The research design is quasi-experimental design
which involves 20 students in VIII A as the experimental class and 20 students at
VIII B as the control class. Experimental class is taught by using the KWL
strategy and the control class is taught by using cooperative learning strategies.
The researcher gave a pre test before learning activities. After that the researcher
taught descriptive text by using the KWL strategy and gave a treatment to the
students. After that, the researcher gave a post test to find out the results of
students' reading skills. The pre -test and post-test scores were analyzed by
descriptive statistical tests by using SPSS 25. Then, the data is tested by
homogeneity test, normality test and hypothesis test by using Minitab. From this
research, it can be seen that the mean score of the experimental class was 76.00
while the mean score of the control class was 51.25. It can be concluded that there
is a significant effect of the KWL stra tegy on students' reading skill at SMP
Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang. In hypothesis test, the t-test was 7.05 and t-table was
2.09, the t-test was higher than t-table. It means that the null hypothesis is rejected
and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. From the results of this study it can be
concluded that the KWL strategy has a significant effect on students' reading
skills at SMP Negeri 15 Tanjungpinang.
