Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not teaching
writing skill by using picture series more effective than that of using powerpoint
at second grade students of SMPN 12 Tanjungpinang in the academic year of
2018/2019 in writing recount. This research design was quasi experimental. There
were two classes which were used as the subjects of the study. The first class was
VIII A as the experimental class when they were taught by using picture series
and the second one was VIII B as the control class which were taught by using
powerpoint. The data of this research were taken from the pre-test and post-test
scores of the experimental and control classes. In analyzing the data, researched
used Mann-Whitney Test through Minitab17 for windows. The Mann-Whitney
used because the data were not normal distribution and not homogeneous. This
proved by the result of the normality test by using Kolmogorov Smirnov test
showed that the P Value was 0.010<0,05 in both classes. It meant that the data
were normally distributed. Next, this proved by the result of the homogeneity test
by using Leven?s test showed that the P Value 0.000<0,05. It meant that the
variance were not homogenous. The result of Mann-Whitney showed that the P
Value 0,0000<0,05. Based on the result, it was concluded that using picture series
is effectiveness in teaching writing skill at second grade students of SMPN 12
Tanjungpinang in the academic year of 2018/2019.
