Abstract :
Code switching is a phenomenon that exists in bilingual or multilingual
society where people have the opportunity to use or alternate several languages.
Like in classroom at SMA Negeri 6 Tanjungpinang who conducted by teachers
English. In the process of code switching, the teachers practiced more Bahasa
Indonesia than English and sometime pratice d Malay language.
This research was aimed to investigate the use of code switching by
English teacher in classroom at SMA Negeri 6 Tanjungpinang. There are two
problems in this study. Those are the types of code switching and the reasons for
the use of code switching by the teachers. This research was conducted through
descriptive qualitative method. The samples of the research consisted of two
English teachers. In order to get the data, the researcher used two instruments of
research, they were: observation and interview. The types of code-switching
appeared in the classroom were observed based on the theory proposed by
Poplack and result of reason based on the interview.
The result of this study are three types of code switching. They were
intersentential switching, intrasentential switching and tag switching. The result of
reason for the student understand, understand the new word, explain ing the
material and get the feedback.
