Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to find out how the ability and the
difficulty in reading recount text in the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 15
Tanjungpinang. This research is descriptive qualitative and the instruments are
test and questionnaire. The participants of this research were selected using
purposive sampling. The researcher used the Arikunto (1998) value assessment
formula to assess students test results. Furthermore, to determine the reading
ability score based on each reading aspect using the Sudjono (2001) value
assessment formula. After that, to analyze the ability to read recount text, the
researcher used the average formula of Arikunto (2008). The last is to analyze
what the difficulties students have in reading recount text, researcher adopted
Sudjono (2001) percentage formula. The results showed that the ability to read
recount text in the eighth grade in the ?fair ? category and the difficulties faced by
them were such as lack of mastery of vocabulary, difficulty in determining the
main idea, and not understanding grammar. Therefore, students must practice the
ability such as increasing vocabulary mastery and gramma r learning, making it
easier to understand other reading aspect and can minimizing the difficulties faced
in reading recount text.
