Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to know whether there was a correlation between students? mastery in simple present tense and their ability in writing descriptive text at the eighth grade of MTs Negeri Bintan Timur. There were two variables in this research; the independent variable was students? maste ry in simple present tense (X) and dependent variable was ability in writing descriptive text (Y). This research used a correlation research. The total of population was 120 students. The researcher used cluster random sampling technique to take sample. The sample in this research was 30 students. In collecting the data of this research, the researcher used test in the form of change verb in the bracket consisted of 25 items and writing descriptive text test. Based on the result of the hypothetical testing, it found that there was significant correlation between students? mastery in simple present tense and their ability in writing descriptive text. Based on the data analysis computed by using SPSS, it was obtained that Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.001 < ? = 0.05. In another word, sig. (2-tailed) lower than alpha. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected
