Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to see the effect of speed reading techniques on
students in answering recount text questions in class VIII at SMP N 12
Tanjungpinang. Then find out whether or not there is a significant effect from the
effect of the speed reading technique to see students' understanding in answering
recount text questions in class VIII SMP N 12 Tanjungpinang. The sample of this
study were students of class VIII.E, totaled 31 students. By used a pre-experimental
research design with pre-test and post-test, this study only involved one class group,
namely the experimental class. The researcher used a multiple-choice test, then the
data was calculated statistically using paired t-test to see if there was a significant
effect on the number of scores obtained for class VIII.E students.
The results of this study showed that the average pre-test score was 58.50 and
the post-test average score was 72.58. The difference between the pre-test and
posttest scores was 14.08. This showed that there is a significant effect from speed
reading technique towards students in working recount text at eighth grade students
class given by the researcher. The paired t-test test, it showed a p-value 0.002 which
mean it is smaller than the 0.05 significant level which indicated that (Ho) is rejected
and (Ha) is accepted so that it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of
paired t-test testing. Therefore, the used of speed reading technique has a significant
effect on students in answering recount text questions at SMP N 12 Tanjungpinang in
the academic year of 2020/2021 .
