Abstract :
This study aims to identify the students? difficulties in mastering vocabulary
at eighth grade of SMP Islam Terpadu Al ? Madinah Tanjungpinang. The subject of
this study was the VIII Shafiyyah, class of SMP Islam Al ? Madinah Tanjungpinang.
The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. For gaining the data, the
researcher used test and questionnaire. All the data were distributed online and
analyzed descriptively. Furthermore, the data of the test was analyzed by Winsteps
application version 4.6.2. and the data of the questionnaire was described the answers
by the students based on the percentage from Google form. The findings showed that
the students still faced the difficulties in vocabulary mastery. Based on the high
percentage of each indicators of difficulties in questionnaire, the students still faced
kind of difficulties such as: (1) the written word or sound ? spelling mismatches, (2)
students still confused in learning terms of antonym, (3) the students never practice
the vocabulary in daily life, and last (4) the teacher applied old ? fashioned technique
thus the students got bored easily. Moreover, in test the students still confused change
the verb into the past tense form
