Abstract :
This study aimed to know what are teachers? perceptions toward the use of social
media in online teaching at SMAN 5 Tanjungpinang. Perception is a process
concerned with the entry of messages or information through the five senses,
namely the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch (Slameto, 2003).
Descriptive qualitative was a research design for this research. The subject in this
research was the English teacher consists of 3 teachers. The setting of place in this
research was at SMAN 5 Tanjungpinang. The instruments in collecting the data
were questionnaire and interview. Based on instrument, the researcher assesses
teachers? perception by twenty one statements. The result shows that teachers feel
teaching online by using social media is comfortable and easy to use, because it is
easily accessible anywhere and anytime, and all students on average have social
media applications. The teachers stated that social media provides English content
that allows students to continuously practice students' English skills, students can
study English in a variety of ways on social media, and they can select English
content that interests them and discover topics that their does not find in the
classroom. Teachers also stated their challenges, such as unstable networks,
limited availability of internet packages, and lack of teacher and student
interaction.
