Abstract :
This study aims to determine the use of code switching and code mixing by teachers and students in the process of English class activities. Specifically, this study examines the types and reasons for using code switching and code mixing in English language learning process. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data collection method used in this study is non-participant observation. The types of code switching and code mixing observed in the classroom are based on the theory proposed by Musyken (2000). Data collection techniques in this study were observation and interview. In addition, to interpret the data obtained, the researcher analyzed using three ways, namely reduction, displaying, and concluding. The results of this study found that there are three types of code mixing and code switching. There are 9 data tag switching that occur, 10 data intra-sentential code switching, and 13 data inter-sentential code switching. Code mixing contained insertion which occured 4 data, alternation 2 data and congruent lexicalization 4 data. This research is expected to help everyone who wants to know about bilingualism and code mixing and code switching.
