Abstract :
This study focused on the university students? ability in understanding the figurative language contained in the short novel The Little Prince. The figurative language focused in the research are personification, metaphor and simile. The aim of the study is to find out how is the ability English Education 6th semester students of Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji in understanding figurative language. This study used qualitative descriptive research in order to analyze the ability of the students. The data were obtained by using questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to get the students? perspective and then the test was used to get the deeper dive into university students? ability. The result of this study showed that the university students? ability in understanding the figurative language still needs a lot of improvement. The highest amount of answers are from simile and the least amount of answers are the questions from metaphor.
