Abstract :
Single mothers or single moms are parents who raise their children without the presence and support of their spouse. The phenomenon of single mom status is unseparated from the bad stigma of society. Single moms have various polemics that they have to go through with themselves. Single moms are often treated as sexual objects. Many people consider single moms to be low-status individuals. Despite the various negative stigmas, single moms are also able to show their identity to society in order to eliminate this negative stigma. This study aims to describe single mom?s independent strategies in Kijang Kota Village, East Bintan Sub-district, Bintan District. This descriptive study used a qualitative approach. The selection of the informant used a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews. The results of this study showed that single mothers demonstrated independence strategies in society through lifestyle, organizations they join in the workplace or living environment, good relationships with fellow citizens and outsiders, reasons for choosing a product to buy, appearance goals to show their identity, independent strategies for meeting their needs, and their response to society's thoughts about single mothers.
