Abstract :
This study aims to develop and find out the validity of DESMA-Box (Descriptive Smart-Box) as a teaching media to teach descriptive text in 8th grade junior high school. DESMA-Box (Descriptive Smart-Box) is a box that contains descriptive text material displayed in the form of a story accompanied by pictures to attract interest and develop student motivation in learning English. The type of research conducted by researcher is Research and Development (R&D), which contains Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. However, in this study, the researcher only carried out until the Development stage. The data was collected from interviews an English teacher, interviews with 20% of students in 1 class, namely 5 students, also analysis the curriculum, and validation sheets. The results of the research obtained, showed that lack of students? motivation in the learning process and it is also known that students like visual media that contains interesting and interactive images. The researcher developed DESMA-Box learning media and received good responses from media and material experts. The validation results found Smart-Box media for descriptive text material in 8th grade is valid. DESMA-Box (Descriptive Smart-Box) received a percentage of 92% from media expert and expert suggested adding several points to the media, after conducting the second validation, a percentage of 100% was obtained on media validation. For material validation, a percentage of 100% was obtained and teaching media was categorized as very feasible.
