Abstract :
Formaldehyde is a finished compound or intermediate that can be used in various industrial applications. Formaldehyde is widely used by the textile, leather, and dye industries. In addition, it can also be used as a plastic or melamine mixture. Generally, formaldehyde with a concentration of 10-40% is a commercial solution of formalin. This material is usually used as an antiseptic, germicide, and preservative. A formaldehyde factory with a capacity of 160,000 tons/year for 300 days/year on a 24-hour/day basis will be established in the Bontang industrial area, East Kalimantan in 2025 with the consideration of easy access to raw materials and product distribution. The raw materials used are methanol and air with a topsoe haldor process. The formaldehyde production process is divided into three stages. The first stage is the raw material pretreatment stage which aims to convert all raw materials into the vapor phase
and heat them to the reactor preparation temperature. The second stage is the product formation stage using methanol as raw material and air with an iron oxide catalyst
occurring at a temperature of 300°C in a shell and tube reactor. The reaction takes place in the vapor phase and is exothermic so it requires a cooling medium to maintain the
reactor temperature conditions so that the catalyst works optimally. The third stage is the product purification stage in the absorber which aims to separate O2, N2, CO2, CO
from formaldehyde solution products. Based on the economic analysis, the factory fixed capital cost (FCI) is Rp48.654.256.450. The cost of working capital (WCI) is
Rp8.586.045.256. Total investment capital (TCI) is Rp57.240.301.705. General expenses (GE) of Rp 1.405.760.000.000 Total production cost (TPC) is Rp11.222.414.054.758. DCFR of 22%. BEP (graphic/analytic) 45%. ROI of 131%. Based on the economic and technical aspects, this Formaldehyde plant is feasible to establish.
