Abstract :
One of the negative impacts of coal mining is acid mine drainage (AAT). The presence of AAT can reduce water quality around the location. In general, the processing is carried out using a settling pond with additional chemicals. In this study, coagulation and flocculation processes were used so that mixing with chemicals could work well. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in contact time and dose of alum coagulant on the parameters of pH, TSS, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) and to determine the efficiency of removal of TSS, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) resulting from these variations. The method used is a circular pipe model coagulation and gravel bed flocculator gravel media with hydraulic stirring continuously. Variations in contact time used were 20, 30 and 40 seconds and variations in the dose of alum coagulant used were 14, 110, 205 and 300 mg/l. The results obtained based on multiple linear regression statistical tests that, variations in contact time and coagulant dose of alum on the pH value and manganese (Mn) concentration had no effect because the significance value was > 0.05. In addition, variations in contact time and dose of alum coagulant on TSS concentration and iron (Fe) concentration have an effect because the significance value is <0.05. The optimal removal efficiency at a contact time of 20 seconds at a dose of 300 mg/l with TSS and iron (Fe) was 99.95% and 99.76%, respectively. In manganese (Mn) at a dose of 14 mg/l that is 47.53%. At a contact time of 30 seconds with a dose of 300 mg/l with TSS, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) respectively were 99.92%; 99.62% and 32.06%. At a contact time of 40 seconds with a dose of 300 mg/l with TSS, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) were 99.91% and 99.62%, respectively. Manganese at a dose of 110 mg/l is 33.40%.
