Abstract :
The thesis entitled, ?The Analysis of Expansion on Nadiem Makarim?s Utterances (Learning from Covid-19) in Singapore Summit 2020? was to analyze Expansion Relation on clause complex of Nadiem Makarim?s dialogue. The source of data was utterances of Nadiem Makarim in Singapore Summit 2020. In this thesis, the writer analyzed Elaboration, Extension and Enhancement which belong to Expansion. The writer used Functional Grammar theory from Linda Gerot and Peter Wignell (1994). Based on characteristics of this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative method, (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap) and (Teknik Bagi Unsur Langsung. The writer used six steps to analyze the data. They were downloading the script of Nadiem Makarim?s utterances from website, dividing all the data on utterances into clause complex, identifying the clause complex in terms of expansion by using Gerot and Wignell?s theory (1994), describing the clause complex by using expansion which covers elaboration, extension and enhancement, interpreting the findings of the analysis, and drawing the conclusion. Finally the writer concluded the result of the analysis of Expansion on Nadiem Makarim?s utterances (Learning from Covid-19) in Singapore Summit 2020. Based on the analysis, it could be concluded that there were 68 clause complexes. It found out 95 times of Elaboration, 91 times of Extension and 51 times of Enhancement. In Elaboration there were 93 times of Paratactic Elaboration; that (63 times), repeating the previous clause (17 times), pronoun (11 times), like (2 times). Furthermore 6 times of Hypotactic Elaboration; which (2 times). In Extension, there were 91 times of Paratactic Extension; and (74 times), but (11 times), or (6 times). In Enhancement there were 16 times of Paratactic Enhancement; so (13 times), for (3 times). Furthermore, 35 times of Hypotactic Enhancement; if (3 times), because (15 times), as (7 times), when (3 times), where (3 times), even though (1 times), wherever (1 times), whether (1 times), who (1 times). Based on the analysis, it could be found out the identification of Expansion was dominated by Elaboration.
