ABSTRACT Widha Wannisa. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION IN TEACHING READING FOR TENTH GRADE OF APHP 1 SMKN KEBONAGUNG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2022/2023.Thesis. English Education Study Program Teacher Trainning and Education Collage STKIP PGRI Pacitan 2022/2023. This research aims to describe the implementation of small group discussion in teaching reading for the tenth grade of APHP 1 SMKN Kebonagung in the academic year 2022/2023. Besides, this research also aims to know the students responses toward small group discussion and the students difficulties. This researcher used a descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of the study were 21 tenth-grade students of APHP 1 SMKN Kebonagung. Researcher collect data by conducting observations, interviews, and documentation. The techniques were data reduction, data display, and conclusions. The use of small group discussions has an impact on student learning outcomes, especially by forming small group discussions that can improve student understanding in reading texts. The results of the use small group discussions in teaching reading text comprehension can be observed in students' responses. It can be concluded that the results of the discussion can indirectly support students to find knowledge according to the expected goals. There were several things that become obstacles for students in learning small group discussions on a given text, namely discussions cannot run as they should, because students do not have background knowledge about texts and they cannot follow the discussion at all, because groups do not understand the text given. Besides, there was no good response among the members of the discussion group. Students came to the conclusion from the interviews that studying, or working in smaller groups. It was very beneficial in helping them understand the text. This was because only two children in a group with different opinions. Researcher can be concluded that there was a marked difference between tenth grade reading text comprehension and small group discussion during learning. As a result, the use of small group discussions in teaching reading can influence student learning outcomes. Keywords : Small group discussion,Reading,Learning
