Abstract :
This research is aimed to analyze the macroproposition and the use of rhetorical devices
and in political speech delivered by Joko widodo in IMF-World Bank Plenary Annual
Meeting 2018 in Bali, Indonesia. The Annual Meeting was attended by the Boards of
Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank group
(WBG) bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development,
parliamentarians, private sector executive, representatives from civil society
organizations and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world
economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid
effectiveness. It focused on the global economy, international development and the
world’s financial system.
The writer studied this influential speech as a unit of analysis by using macro
structure element of discourse analysis design by Van Dijk and Rhetorical Devices
purposed by Jones and Peccei (2004). The writer uses qualitative-descriptive analysis
as the method of the research. Based on the result, the researcher found 7
macropropositions as the main discussion in the speech and reveals 14 rhetorical
devices that the speaker used in his speech. So, there are 20 data found in this research.
The use of metaphor, parallelism, pronoun, and euphemism used when the speaker
wanted to highlighted the important message from his speech. Yet, the writer did not
found The Rule of Three in this speech.
