Abstract :
This research discussed the contrastive analysis of Indonesian and English proverbs about animals. The objective of this research is to portray how Indonesian and British transfer values through proverbs about animals. In order to achieve the research objective, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method by comparing the proverbs in the two languages in the form of sentences. 7700 Peribahasa Indonesia, Kamus Peribahasa Indonesia, Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs and The Facts on File Dictionary of Proverbs are dictionaries picked by the writer to stand as the data sources in this research. By applying the conceptual metaphor theory and procedure of contrastive analysis, the results showed that Indonesian and English proverbs about animals showed differences for their speakers in transferring values. They use different animal names which indicate that Indonesia belongs to the Austronesian language family and English from the Indo-European language family. The differences in the themes used, forms and cultural based also found within this research. The differences and similarities of these languages’ proverbs were due to differences and similarities in ideas, beliefs, geographical condition and life experiences. It is necessarily to understand proverbs, specifically proverbs about animals because through proverbs the existence of different experiences by each cultural group causes the way of interpreting also be different, and this analysis can add an insight to recognize proverbs about animals early.
