Abstract :
In translating English gerund into Indonesian, the translator may try to maintain
the form of a gerund which is noun by adding Indonesian affixes such as pe- an,
ke- an and –an. However, in practice, a translator needs to use other procedures to
achieve a dynamic equivalence where the meaning is the most important factor to
transfer and not the noun form. In that case, the writer in this research is interested
in analyzing the translation strategy used by the translator in translating gerund in
one of the famous literary works from Edgar Allan Poe, entitled The Black Cat
into its translation Kucing Hitam. Here, the writer applied descriptive qualitative
method and proposed the theory of Catford of translation shift strategy. Further,
the result of the analysis shows that the writer found that the translator only
applied three kinds of translation strategies related to category shifts, they are
structure shift (18 data), class shift (13 data) and unit shift translation (3 data). In
accordance, regarding to the result of data findings, the most translation strategy
or technique used by the translator in translating the short story is structure shift
translation.
