Abstract :
This research is aimed to explore the shadow of Emil Sinclair character as
reflected in Hermann Hesse’s Demian and to identify the types of Shadow appear
in Hermann Hesse’s Demian. The writer applied Jung’s psychological approach,
the theory of Collective Unconcious and the concept of Archetype. In this
research, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method and typically library
research. The method helps the writer to describe about the shadow and explain
the types of shadow appear in Hermann Hessse’s Demian. Furthermore, the writer
collected the data from the Demian novel in the form of narration, sentences, and
dialogues which are indicates as Emil Sinclair’s Shadow. Finally, based on the
results of the analysis, it shows that the Shadow of Emil Sinclair was gradually
appeared and influenced his actions. It can be seen based on the aspects
mentioned by Jung in his concept of Shadow. The aspects that emerged as the
Shadow of Emil Sinclair character in Hermann Hesse’s Demian are shown in the
form of the things and desires which are hidden and avoided, things which are
ashamed of, things that are seen as an evil, and the uncivilized desire and emotion.
In the Demian novel, the writer also found that Sinclair has experienced three
types of shadow, namely personal shadow, collective shadow, and archetypal
shadow. Three of them are emerged through his personal experience, collectives
unconscious experience, and the ancestral experience.
