Abstract :
In this thesis, the writer discusses about suspense of plot built in The Maze
Runner novel by James Dashner. The main purpose of this research is to describe
how is suspense of plot built in The maze Runner novel by James Dashner.
The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Then, the
object and the source of the data is the novel ?The Maze Runner by James
Dashner, published in 2009 and consists of 62 chapters and 478 pages. Moreover,
the instrument of this research is note taking. The theory that is used to analyze the
data is structural affect theory and structuralism approach. Based on the findings
and discussion.
The writer concluded suspense built in the plot based on structural affect
theory. In structural affect theory, suspense is evoked by postponing the story?s
outcome. The process of suspense consists of initiating event that leads the readers
in the story and foreshadowing that produces the readers emotions with heightens
or generates suspense through the hints in the story. In this research, the writer
found there are 27 events, 18 initiating event data and 9 foreshadowing data. The
implication of this thesis is to give understanding to the readers how suspense
becomes the important aspect to create a good story especially in literature.
Expectantly, this thesis can give many benefits for the readers and all of the students
of English and Literature to learn more about suspense.
