Abstract :
This thesis explores the depiction of BDSM lifestyle in a literary work as a social
phenomenon as reflected in Fifty Shades movies. The aim of this thesis is to
reveal the depictions of BDSM lifestyle as seen in the main characters Fifty
Shades movies. The writer uses sociological approach and BDSM theory to
analyze the BDSM lifestyle of the main characters. This study is descriptive
qualitative method that applies BDSM lifestyle theory of Ann P. Turoczy (2017)
and B. J. Dempsey (2013). According to Ann P. Turoczy (2017) there are seven
steps in developing relationship in BDSM lifestyle: associating with others in the
community, deliberating the limits of the relationship, exploring suitability in the
context of BDSM relationships, studying about BDSM relationships, evolving
communication skills in the context of BDSM relationships, discovering value in
the relationship in the context of the BDSM relationship, defining one and another
within the context of a BDSM relationship. The result of this analysis shows, there
are seven steps in evolving a relationship in the context of BDSM lifestyle found in
Fifty Shades movies experienced by Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, they are;
creating connection, negotiating the limits of their BDSM relationship make both
of them trust to each other, take roles as a Dom and a Submissive, run covert
monogamy relationship as their orientation in their BDSM lifestyle, finding the
same needs and wants in exploring the suitability of each other in running BDSM
relationship, sharing information about their experiences in BDSM to increase
their communication skill, finding love as the value in their BDSM relationship,
and having a long journey to understand and accept each other in defining
theirselves.
