Abstract :
This research discusses a novel which written by Khaled Hosseini entitled The
Kite Runner. The novel tells a story about Amir as main character that showing
self-confusion in his life growth because of his life experience. Besides, the novel
offers psychological of main character in great detail since there is personality
development on it. This thesis has one research question which is how is Amir?s
personality development in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini?s seen from Erik
Erikson?s theory.
In this study, the writer applies descriptive qualitative method since the data are in
the form of sentence not numeric. The data are derived from the words, sentences,
dialogues, and statements of the novel, which concern the objectives of the study.
Further, this thesis uses personality development by Erik Erikson?s with three
stages in it such as childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
The results of the analysis show that Amir?s personality is developed in each level
of his age. At childhood stage, it is seen that he changed his negative thinking
towards his father into more active and productive activity in order to gain
recognition from his father. At adolescence stage, it is seen that his personality
changes from hopeless person into never give up and braver to take decision for
his future. At adulthood stage, he started to regret his past and haunted by guilty
feeling after he successfully gained his successful career as a writer and he tried to
fix it by atoning his sin through Sohrab, Hassan?s son.
