Abstract :
The research discusses about the representation of Chinese-Indonesian in the Jakarta
Post online news media in 2014-2019. Chinese-Indonesians have been through long way of
discrimination. Referring to the previous study done by Hoon (2007), Post Soeharto era is the
revival of Chinese-Indonesian. However, the anti-Chinese sentiment arises again in 2014-
2019 and it worries Chinese-Indonesian. The main purpose of the research is to be able to
sketch how Chinese-Indonesian is represented in the Jakarta Post.
In order to reach the purpose of the research, the research applies the three?dimensional theory by Fairclough (1995) which is about textual analysis, discursive practice
analysis, and socio-cultural analysis. The research is also assisted by Sketch Engine tool.
Sketch Engine tool is a tool for doing Corpus Linguistics analysis which is about
Concordance and Collocation. Further since the analysis needs an in depth analysis of each
words that construct meaning, the research applies descriptive qualitative method to
overcome the problem.
The result of the analysis shows how Jakarta Post news media describe Chinese?Indonesian ethnic. The findings suggest that Chinese-Indonesian is constructed as
economically minded community and target of racial discrimination. The findings also
suggest Chinese-Indonesians are given a freedom to express themselves in a platform by the
Jakarta Post to distribute their fidgetiness through article in the Jakarta Post. Lastly, the
research figures out that when the word of ?business? is overused, it could lead the systemic
racism. The research reveals that constructing Chinese-Indonesian as a target of racial
discrimination is a prevention act of racial discrimination by the Jakarta Post.
