Abstract :
In this thesis, the writer discusses a novel by George Orwell with the title 1984. This novel tells about two outside party members which are Winston Smith and Julia who live under the government control over public and private which is the government adheres to a system to maintain its power. The writer is interested in describing Totalitarianism further since this form of government still exists today. In this study, the writer intends to find out How is Totalitarianism portrayed in the novel 1984 by George Orwell by analyzing the main character which are Winston Smith and Julia. In answering the research problem, the writer applies the descriptive qualitative method and conducted library research. The data are in the form of dialogues and narrations. This study applies Philosophical approach when the idea of totalitarianism is only Orwell's imagination as a fut story. Further, this thesis uses totalitarianism theory by Hannah Arendt, in which totalitarianism could be observed through the characteristics and strategies, there are the leader, terror, propaganda, and indoctrination. The result of this analysis shows that the 1984 novel by George Orwell clearly depicts totalitarianism. The writer found that the 1984 novel has one single party leader that it is a feature of a totalitarian government, in the novel 1984 a totalitarian party is called Big Brother who governs and controls the people in Oceania. Further, at propaganda strategy, it is shown through the daily activities of Winston Smith as an outside party member in the records department who deals with issues of editing news before it is distributed to the public. At terror strategy, it is shown by a lot of tools that are used to oversee and frighten its people, that make its people lose their freedom. At indoctrination strategy, Winston?s character is shown as the victim to make him an obedient individual who loved the party. Key words: Totalitarianism, Philosophical Approach 1984
